Making the Most of the Space – Edinburgh Campus Library

Making the Most of the Space in the Library

During revision and exam time (December 2013) the library learning space is going to be changed to make it more effective for students.  The demand for space in the library is increasing, sometimes up to 3000 students use the space daily, and the noise levels are rising.  We have had feedback telling us that it is difficult for students to find quiet study tables to revise and work.
Therefore during the December 2013 revision time and exam time the following will apply:

Library zones – noise levels
Ground floor  – red zone  – no talking / silent working (currently red so no change)
First floor – orange  zone – talk softly – quiet work-related discussion – including café (change from green)
Second floor –  red zone  – no talking / silent working (currently red so no change)
Third floor – red zone  – no talking / silent working (change from orange)
Stairs / stairwells – orange

Library study tables – unattended items

Due to the high demand for study tables it is not possible to reserve a space by leaving belongings but not occupying or using it.  If students do this then the study table is not available for other students to use.  Unattended items are also a security risk.
A monitoring process will be carried out to identify unattended items and if they are left for 20 minutes a yellow reminder will be placed on the table.  If after a further hour the items are still unattended, they will be taken to the library desk for safekeeping and collection.

These changes will come into effect from Monday 2nd December until Friday 20th December
