Student PCs – Power Management
Information Services have been running a PC Power Management pilot since the end of 2013.
The pilot has been running in several student PC labs – automatically logging people off and hibernating machines when not in use.
The pilot has been running in DB 1.57, LIB 2.02, LIB 2.05, MB G22, SR G12 and SR G13
This has had the following positive effects on the PC Lab environment:
- Vast reduction in power consumption (PCs are not on for extended periods of time when not in use)
- Faster startup (resume from hibernate is about 5 times quicker than a full cold boot)
- Better security (students who walk away from a computer without logging off have less risk of others accessing their data/emails etc)
We will be rolling this setup out to all lab machines from Tuesday 25th March 2014.
Students – please remember, you should: –
- Log off when you leave a HWU desktop PC – data may be lost if you don’t
- Save your work on your H drive. You will then be able to access your files from any HWU desktop PC, and your data will be secure and backed up regularly.
