Study Survival tips – try our top ten

The semester is well underway, you have a busy schedule and the pressure is building…  Deadlines creep closer while studying takes up more of your time.

Don’t panic  –  coping with university study is something you’ll get better at.   There’s no magic solution – but the following tips might help…

  1. Develop your study skills as you go – no one arrives with all the right skills.
  2. Find out what works for you – there’s no single best way to study.
  3. Take responsibility for your own learning – plan, organise and work at it.
  4. Concentrate on understanding what you have been taught – rather than trying to memorise it.
  5. Work with your classmates – it’s amazing how much you’ll actually know between you.
  6. Work steadily throughout the semester – ‘cramming’ isn’t a recommended study technique.
  7. Teach your family and friends – explaining something can help you develop a deeper understanding of it.
  8. Speak to your lecturers, they’re on your side…don’t be intimidated by them – they want you to succeed.
  9. Work, rest and play – remember to take breaks.
  10. Don’t stay stuck – ask for help (from lecturers, other university staff, family or friends).
