Finding resources for your work

If you’ve missed (or forgotten) some of the info we gave at the induction sessions – you might find the following reminders about finding resources useful.

We have a global online collection of around 50,000 e-journals and 85,000 e-books, as well as our print collection and electronic databases. Our online collection is available 24/7 – and can be accessed from on or off campus.

Discovery

discovery_logoWhen looking for resources you should use Discovery – Discovery searches the library catalogue (all campuses) and journal articles and you can easily filter and refine your search to locate the best resources for your work.

You can also use Discovery to build up your e-Shelf (so you can return to resources easily once you’ve found them), save your queries, reserve an item that is out on loan or check your account status (loans/requests/fines etc).

Databases

We have nearly 250 databases that you can browse and search.

UK students & staff – SCONUL

UK students/staff can access local University and research libraries in the UK and Ireland through the SCONUL scheme. Depending on where you live in relation to your campus library, you might find this useful if another university library is more local to you than your HWU one.

If you can’t find what you need in the HWU catalogue, you might find the item in another university library and be able to access it there.

All campuses – Interlibrary loans

If your library doesn’t have a copy of an item you need to consult for your research, the Interlibrary Loan service will try to obtain it for you. The Interlibrary Loan service is available across all our campuses to Staff, Postgraduate students and Undergraduates in their 3rd, 4th or 5th year.

Help

You’ll find subject specific help on your Subject Guide – but if you can’t find what you’re looking for ask at the Service Desk or get in touch – we’re here to help.
