Targeted Malware Attempt

Some HWU users have reported that they have received a suspicious email which

  • includes an accurate postal address for the recipient
  • has a Word (.dot) attachment, with the password to open the file

On further investigation, this has been confirmed as a targeted malware attempt.

If you receive a suspicious email – don’t be fooled into thinking it must be OK just because the sender appears to know a lot about you.  Obtaining work and personal details about you can be relatively easy from a variety of online sources.

If you receive a similar email

  • forward it to abuse@hw.ac.uk
  • delete the email from your inbox/sent items
