What’s happening with the Library refurbishment #edincampuslib

The HWU Edinburgh Campus Library refurbished project is progressing well.
An overview of the project details can be found at how we are  ‘Transforming Your Library”
We will keep you updated through these blog posts and through our social media channels.  There will be news of the exciting new developments and we will keep you updated as to which spaces and resources are available in the Library during the enabling and refurbishing works.

Phases of the project
The refurbishment project is now in Phase 4 and Phase 5 will begin in April
Phase 4 includes work to Floor 3 of the Library and also the main stairs.
It will be finished in April.  There will be study space and PCs and some of the book stock.
The refurbished Floor 3 will provide 387 study seats – the total in the library for during phase 5 is 615 and increase of almost 200 from Phase 4.

Phase 5 work, Floor 2, will start in April.  There will be demolition work starting at the beginning of Phase 5 and therefore we are promoting alternative study space across campus.  Study spaces can be found in Learning Commons 1, Learning Commons 2, James Watt Centre, Teaching Rooms x 16.
There is also going to be study space available in Oriam – in the Bistro and also in the space above the exam hall (details to follow).

Location of Books in the Library
Currently we have books on Floor 2 and on the Ground Floor.
The books with class numbers 000 – 539 are located on the Ground Floor.
The books with class numbers 540 – 999 are  located on Floor 2.
In April some books will move from Floor 2 to Floor 3, and some books will move offsite until the summer. Check here for details.

The Quick Reference, Dictionaries and Dissertations have also been moved to the Ground Floor.  Please take care when using the mobile shelving and check that other students or staff are not already in the gaps between shelves when you move them.

Searching for books on Discovery

There is now a Map it feature in Discovery which means that when searching for a book and viewing the results, there will be an option to view the location where the book can be found.

Progress is being made on configuring ID cards for access through the entry gates to the Library and this should be in place for current students before the end of semester.

Student lockers are available in the Library – details at the Service Desk and these will be issued via the Library Management System in the same way as books.

The Library is open 24/7 until May 16th/17th
