International Welcome and Information Fair

We had a lovely time yesterday at the International Welcome and Fair at the Edinburgh Campus, it was good to speak to so many new students and hope our guides and leaflets will help you find your feet using our resources and services.

We are also taking part in a Study in the UK session, Friday 11 September, 11.30-12.30 in LT2 as part of the orientation programme for International students, please come along, it provides useful advice and information to help get you started with your studies at Heriot-Watt.

Come along to a clinic and we’ll give you a hand.  The clinics are held on the 1st floor of the Library:

  • Wednesday 9th Sept: 1030 – 1200
  • Thursday 10th Sept: 1030 – 1200
  • Tuesday 15th Sept: 1430 – 1600

No need to book – just come along with your device.

Newspaper, periodical and magazine content- NEXIS trial

We have trial access to NEXIS which is an alternative product to Factiva.  Factiva provides our newspapers, trade and practitioner journals in all subject areas and both services provide the following:

• Market information
• Industry information
• Company information
• Material in other languages
• Research data

Access to the trial is via a trial ID please contact Catherine Ure if you would like a trial ID. The trial will expire Tuesday 19 May. Factiva is available from the A_Z list of databases

We have trial access to PressReader until 15 December 2014.  PressReader is an online newspaper and magazine kiosk that provides full content digital replicas of more than 2,500 titles from 100 countries in 60 languages. Advanced digital features include keyword searching, foreign language translation, text-to-voice, article sharing, social networking as well as active links within most publications. Content is always up to date and is often available before print.

Edinburgh Campus Library: Library and IT Essentials

All new undergraduate students receive a timetabled introduction to the Library and IT services and resources.  Your lecturer will direct you to the session arranged for your course or you can check this timetable.

Session last 25 minutes and cover:

  • Access to Library & IT services and resources
  • Finding items on reading lists
  • Study facilities
  • Email
  • Wi-Fi
  • Vision (Heriot-Watt University’s VLE – a web-based integrated teaching and learning environment)
  • Skills Development

Venue: Anderson Room, Edinburgh Campus Library (top floor) unless otherwise directed.

National Libraries Day, Saturday 8 February 2014

PrintTo celebrate National Libraries Day, Edinburgh Campus Library is opening its doors to the public, visitors are free to explore and browse the library print collections.  Staff will be on hand to answer questions and help you make the most of your visit.

The Edinburgh Campus is set in 380 acres of beautiful parkland and is rich in nature, wildlife and art.  Guides to the campus (produced by Heritage and Information Governance) will be available for visitors wishing to extend their visit by exploring one of the trails around campus or finding out more about it’s history.

Maps and directions to Edinburgh Campus are available on the Heriot-Watt University website.

National Libraries Day rounds off a week’s worth of celebrations in school, college, university, workplace and public libraries across the UK.

Book Week Scotland Lucky Book Dip- Sold out!

Thank you very much to everyone who participated in the Lucky Book Dip at the Edinburgh Campus Library today.  We sold out in just over 2 hours and raised £142 for the Scottish Book Trust.

The books are wrapped and ready for the Big Book Bash Lucky Dip at the Edinburgh Campus Library on Monday 25 November 12.00-16.00.  To make things more interesting we have provided clues to the content on the wrapping.  Books have been kindly donated by Information Services staff and it is just £1.00 to take part- all proceeds to the Scottish Book Trust.

Big Book Bash Lucky Dip: Edinburgh Campus Library

To celebrate Book Week Scotland, Information Services are organising a Big Book Bash Lucky Dip in the Edinburgh Campus Library for staff and students on 25 November 2013, 12:00-16:00 with all proceeds going to the Scottish Book Trust.  Book Week Scotland take place 25 November – 1 December 2013 and is about celebrating books and reading in every part of life in Scotland.
