Geofacets and Knovel trials

Heriot-Watt currently has trials of two new resources, Knovel and Geofacets.

Knovel is an applied engineering resource, giving fully searchable online access to hundreds of eBooks and technical information about materials and properties.  (It is different to the Knovel eBooks provided by professional bodies such as IChemE.)

Geofacets is a maps database, which can be searched with geographic and keyword searches.  It is primarily aimed at geoscientists and petroleum engineers, but may be useful to staff and students from other disciplines.

These resources will be available until mid-March. Please send any feedback to your Subject Librarian.

Edinburgh campus staff/research postgraduates
The suppliers of Knovel and Geofacets will be at Edinburgh campus on Wednesday 25th February to give short demonstrations of Knovel and Geofacets, and to answer any questions you have about these products. Please sign up for these sessions via the links below:

New Engineering Disasters Resource

Heriot-Watt staff and students now have access to Engineering Case Studies Online, which will be useful for students and staff studying all types of engineering.

Screenshot of Engineering Case Studies Online, showing coverage of the Ford Pinto controversy These case studies focus on the causes of engineering failures, and give a short summary of the incident, alongside original documents, eyewitness accounts, inquiry reports and TV documentaries.

Many well-known engineering disasters are covered, including:

Piper Alpha

Windscale Fire

Space Shuttle Challenger

Big Dig Ceiling Collapse

If you have any questions about using Engineering Case Studies Online, please contact your Subject Librarian.
