There have been a number of reports from staff of suspicious emails alleging to be from yahoo or gmail accounts of named staff. These can appear to be very believable and sophisticated. Scammers can take names from university or company websites and then create other email accounts e.g. yahoo with the same name and distribute to colleagues. This doesn’t mean they have access to HWU accounts – they are just copying names.
In the run up to Christmas such phishing emails are likely to increase so extra care and vigilance is needed.
If you think you’ve received a phishing email in your @hw.ac.uk email:
- Don’t reply to the message
- Don’t click on any links
- Don’t open any attachments
- Forward the email or other suspicious emails to abuse@hw.ac.uk
- Delete it
